Repetition is the Key

The size of a kindergartener’s vocabulary is a good predictor for reading comprehension success during the elementary years. That’s one of the reasons it is so important to read aloud in the years before your child starts school. There are thousands of words in books that don’t appear often enough in conversation for children to learn their meanings. They need to hear them used in meaningful ways repeatedly to begin to understand what they mean. That’s why rereading the same book over and over again is so valuable to young children.
