Accountant

The Dayton Metro Library is seeking a full-time Accountant to join our Finance team! This position reports to the Accounting Manager and works at the Main Library in downtown Dayton. The successful candidate will have experience with accounting practices, payroll routines, and purchasing practices, preferably in a public institution. Join our team today!

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintains financial records according to state auditing requirements.
  • Assists with maintaining current data on the financial condition of the Library. Provides data and assists with preparation of the annual budget.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining a system of internal accounting controls.
  • Audits personnel changes prior to biweekly payroll process.
  • Assists with receiving and depositing of all library funds in an authorized depository and investing funds to maximize interest earnings. Completes journal for deposited library funds.
  • Maintains fixed asset system for financial purposes and prepares statement of values for insurance renewal.
  • Collects and reviews all purchase requisitions and processes purchase orders.
  • Assists with the filing of government reports, such as sales tax returns, employee census, 1099s, Ohio withholding taxes, Ohio Worker’s Compensation and ensures W-9 compliance, in advance of filing.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university in business administration-preferably with a major in finance or accounting; and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Knowledge of fund and cash basis accounting principles and financial record keeping requirements.
  • Knowledge of payroll, accounts payable, and fixed asset procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, policy and procedure manuals and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, coworkers and members of the community. Ability to apply active listening skills.

Compensation and Benefits:  The starting hourly rate for this position is $23.25.  (Those applicants with a relevant Master’s degree may qualify for the professional offset, which would increase the hourly rate by $3.00 per hour.)  Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance along with paid time off and OPERS retirement.
