On the Brink of One Million Digital Checkouts

Dayton Metro Library is on pace to reach or exceed one million digital checkouts in 2020! This accomplishment illustrates the continued growth and importance of digital lending of ebooks and audiobooks, especially as more are people staying home.

OverDrive and Libby StatisticsDayton Metro Library has been providing readers 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks since January of 2007, through OverDrive and the Libby reading app. Total digital checkouts in 2007 were 13,515. Reader interest and usage has grown each of the 13 years since.

“Digital books are convenient and easy,” said Holly Varley Richards, Collection Development Director. “Even large, heavy books fit neatly into your phone or tablet. Any ebook can become Large Type just by changing your settings. And of course, borrowing digitally means you don’t have to leave home if you’re not comfortable doing so.”

The highest-circulating title borrowed in 2020 so far is the audiobook version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Romance is the most popular genre in a vast catalog that also includes mysteries, thrillers, nonfiction and children/young adult books.

“We want to motivate all of our dedicated digital borrowers, and anyone who is curious and wants to give it a try, to borrow lots of ebooks and audiobooks this fall so we’ll reach that million mark!” said Richards.

Readers need a valid Dayton Metro Library card and PIN, or an eCard, to borrow books from the digital collection. Readers can use any major device, including Apple, Android, Chromebook or Kindle.

Visit or download the Libby app to borrow ebooks and audiobooks anytime, anywhere. For information or assistance, call the Library’s Ask Me Line at 937-463-2665.
