Dayton Corps/AmeriCorps Service Members Needed

For Homework Help at the Madden Hills and Northwest Branch Libraries

Dayton Metro Library is seeking enthusiastic individuals to work with students in the ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK program at the Northwest and Madden Hills Branch Libraries in Dayton. ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK, coordinated by Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program through ServeOhio, provides support and guidance to K-12 students. Up to 14 Service Member positions will be available starting in September, with options for 300 hours (12 hours a week) or 675 hours (23 hours a week) of service. Training opportunities are offered, stipends for living expenses are available, and members may be eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon completion of their term of service. AmeriCorps Service Members must be at least 18 years of age, or 17 with parental permission.

ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK Service Members may:

  • Review school assignments
  • Offer feedback on projects
  • Guide students to reliable homework tools at the Library, such as HelpNow by Brainfuse
  • Suggest effective study skills
  • Offer much-needed one-on-one attention and support

“We’ve seen how the ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK program can make a huge difference in a child’s educational success," said Arrington.

The majority of ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK students are between ages 7 and 12 years old. Past successes include a fifth grader who turned his grades from Fs into two As, a B and a C, and a high school senior in jeopardy of not graduating, who proudly earned her diploma after participating in the RYH program.

"As we grow more responsive to educational inequities, we know that programs like ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK are key to providing at-risk students with the high-quality instruction and support they need in order to reach and exceed a common standard," said Arrington. "This service is especially rewarding for anyone who wants to make a real difference in the lives of young people."

Starting in mid-September, ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK will be available weekday afternoons and evenings at the Northwest Branch Library, 2410 Philadelphia Drive, and the Madden Hills Branch Library, 2542 Germantown Street. Details are in flux due to changing health restrictions.

ROCK YOUR HOMEWORK is coordinated by Community Corps, an AmeriCorps program through ServeOhio, and administered by the University of Dayton Fitz Center for Leadership in Community. For more information or to apply, visit U.D.’s Fitz Center for Leadership in Community, or call 937.229.5430.
