Dayton Metro Library and ThinkTV/PBS Kids will host a high-energy, activity-filled week for young learners Monday, July 13 - Friday, July 17. Imagine Your Story: Reading and Adventure Camp is an online day camp viewable at Dayton Metro Library’s Facebook Page and the ThinkTV Facebook page.
Each day, Camp Counselors will take children on virtual field trips to explore local attractions such as the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, Carillon Historical Park, Germantown MetroPark, and the Dayton Art Institute. Kids will learn about the daily topic, be encouraged to do fun crafts and activities, sing, dance, play and read together.
“We’ve got plenty of silliness planned to make our virtual Reading and Adventure Camp lots of fun for kids from kindergarten through third grade,” said Diane Farrell, Library Director of External Relations and Development. “Working together with our partners at ThinkTV ensures this is a quality online learning opportunity for young kids.”
“ThinkTV PBS welcomes the opportunity to inspire families to read more, and to provide a little summer fun during these challenging times,” said Gloria Skurski, Director of Education for ThinkTV. “We are thrilled to continue our important collaboration with Dayton Metro Library by keeping kids engaged in learning during the summer months.”
Imagine Your Story Reading and Adventure Camp airs Monday - Friday, July 13 - 17 on the Library’s Facebook page and the ThinkTV Facebook page. A new 30 minute episode will be posted each day at 10:00 a.m., focusing themes kids can relate to, such as animals, trains, or music. Kids will enjoy a virtual field trip, storytime with Ms. Winnie, fun games and activities, a sing along, and silly antics with the Camp Counselors.
Monday, July 13: Animals - Explore the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery
Tuesday, July 14: Colors - Visit the Dayton Art Institute
Wednesday, July 15: Planes & Trains - Visit Carillon Historical Park
Thursday, July 16: Bugs & Other Creatures - See Germantown MetroPark
Friday, July 17: Music - Meet Neil Gittleman, Director of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra
“Restrictions on in-person activities this summer required us to be creative with our programming,” said Farrell. “The good thing about a virtual camp experience like this is that anyone can watch, even after the event is over, because it will remain online. And watching the programs can be counted toward Summer Challenge goals.”
Dayton Metro Library will provide suggested reading lists for each day’s theme, and ThinkTV/PBS Kids will provide activity lists through their resources.
Imagine Your Story Reading and Adventure Camp was made possible by a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), awarded by the State Library of Ohio. Sponsors also include Learn to Earn Dayton (The Equity Fellows Initiative) and the Gerald M. and Carole A. Miller Family Foundation.
