David Greer has been a practicing trial lawyer in Dayton, Ohio, for more than fifty years. He’s also author of the book, God is Merciful: The Colorful Career of John E. Egan. Readers will have the opportunity to meet Greer and learn more about this true tale of legal history in Dayton on Tuesday, September 25, 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Main Library’s Bassani Theater Off Third, 215 E. Third Street. The event is free.
In God is Merciful, Greer explores the fascinating career of Dayton trial attorney Jack Egan, who represented clients from 1899 to 1936. According to Greer, Egan “devoted his considerable forensic skills to assist an appalling array of hoodlums, con men, bootleggers, hit men, bank robbers, safe crackers, gamblers and assorted scoundrels.” Among his clients were the notorious John Dillinger, Valentine’s Day massacre hit man Raymond Nugent, and con man Fred Gondorf.
"If the past cannot tell us where we are going, perhaps it can tell us how we got to where – and more importantly, what – we are,” says Greer.
Books will be available for purchase at the event, which is free and open to the public. For more information, call 937.463.2665 or find the event here.
