Dayton Metro Library Recognized as Diversity Team Champion

Dayton Metro Library received the Diversity Champion Team Award at the National Land-Grant Diversity Conference. The award was presented at the 14th Annual National Land-Grant Conference on Thursday, February 15, in Hebron, Kentucky.

The Diversity Champion Awards recognize the accomplishments of individuals and teams that contribute to diversity and inclusion through exemplary leadership. Recipients demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion through diversity and multicultural programming, cultural competency, community outreach activities, or other initiatives that are in keeping with the goal of this annual National Land-Grant Diversity Conference.

“This award affirms the important work that the Diversity and Inclusion Committee does within the workplace and the role it plays in how we interact with family, friends and individuals outside of work,” said Sharon Taste, Dayton Metro Library Branch Manager and co-chair of the Committee.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee (D/I Committee) is comprised of staff members from branches and departments across the Dayton Metro Library system. Launched in 2016, it is dedicated to fostering an environment where every employee perspective is valued, and creating opportunities for education and dialogue.

D/I Committee members contribute articles in the weekly Staff Newsletter to raise awareness, broach conversation and address important topics such as religion, gender, and race in an accessible way.

Other D/I Committee efforts include a True Colors staff essay contest, a Brown Bag Learning Lunch series that encourages open dialogue, and training opportunities for staff. Most recently, Underdog Academy brought their spoken word performance to the Library, sharing powerful poetry to highlight their experiences of racism.

“The Awards Committee selected Dayton Metro Library for the Team recognition due to their Diversity and Inclusion Committee’s intentional efforts to value all employee perspectives and create opportunities for education and dialogue throughout the county-wide Library system,” said Pat Holmes, Awards Chair. “We congratulate Dayton Metro Library.”
