On Saturday, February 10, Dayton Metro Library received a generous gift from The Society of Mayflower Descendants in honor of the 400th anniversary of the landing of the Mayflower in the New World. Sandra St. Martin, Governor of the Ohio Colony of the Mayflower Society, presented the Library with 42 genealogy reference books during a meeting of the Montgomery County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society at the Library.
The original title of the book series was “Mayflower Families Through Five Generations” or “Mayflower Families,” but genealogists generally refer to them as “the Silver Books” for their silver covers. The Library previously owned only four volumes.
“These books will be useful to genealogists who think they may have Pilgrim ancestors,” says Genealogy Librarian Shawna Woodard. “In particular, persons who have already found Revolutionary War ancestors may be able to take their lineage back even further using these resources.”
Ms. Woodard and Jamie McQuinn, Manager of Special Collections, accepted the donation on behalf of the Library.
