Talking About Books

Before children learn to read, they need to learn a lot about language. The skills of listening and speaking will later become the skills of reading and writing. The brains of babies and young children are different from those of adults. They have an amazing ability to learn language that begins to decline by age 8. To learn more about this watch this TED Talk by Dr. Patricia Kuhl.

Sharing books with children and talking about the pictures is good strategy to use to support your child's success in school. For children who are not yet talking, point to objects label them, talk about them, and place your baby's finger on the object. For children who are talking, ask them to tell you what they see and what they think is happening. Here are some book recommendations to use with this strategy:
