CComprehension of text in non-fiction is not identical to comprehension of fiction. The vocabulary is different and sometimes very rarely spoken in conversation, and the sentence structure can be different. The way that information is laid out is also very different. There may be a table of contents, an index, a glossary, photographs and charts with captions, and a list of sources. For this reason there is value to reading non-fiction aloud and talking about the book and it’s unique structure when the topic is interesting to your preschooler.
