The Sounds in Words

During the preschool years, many children learn to discriminate when words start with the same sound (phoneme) and when words rhyme.  This is an important development because it is a good predictor of reading success in elementary school.  It can be challenging for some children because they must shift their attention away from the meaning of a word, to the sounds in the word. You can help your child develop this focus by rereading books that play with speech sounds through rhymes, by commenting on the sound patterns and asking your preschooler to predict what rhyming word comes next in the sentence.
