The Wonder of Living Things

“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and the mystery of the world.” (Rachel Carson, 1965)

The Get Outside Book Club is a great way to provide this companionship while children explore and delight in the natural world. They will bring interest and enthusiasm and you can take advantage of these “teachable moments” to encourage them to observe closely, talk about their observations, make comparisons, and hypothesize about causes and explanations. Adult attention, questions and guidance can take children to higher levels of scientific knowledge as well as spark their future stewardship of the planet.

Join a children’s librarian and a nature educator this Friday, Sept 20 at the Hills and Dales Metropark in Kettering to encounter the mysteries of the night. Maybe you’ll see (or hear) an owl: Get Outside Book Club: Nighttime Exploration
