The Dayton Metro Library welcomes your time and talents! There are a number of volunteer opportunities available, and we will accommodate your preferences for location and hours as much as possible.
Give your input to the library by becoming an advisory council member. This volunteer opportunity makes suggestions for programming ideas and other future projects. Occasional projects are assigned in assisting with the creation of programs or surveys. Opportunity Description
This event assists the Friends of the Library with various duties. You will be notified about three weeks before the sale to schedule a convenient time. Sales are generally in April and October. Volunteers are required to assist computer trainers during computer classes and open computer labs. This includes set-up, assisting participants, and clean-up. A great way to assist New Americans learn how to speak English is to volunteer as an English Practice Helper/Conversation Partner. Volunteers are needed to research back issues of the Dayton Daily News/Journal Herald for obituaries and then transcribe that information onto a worksheet. Volunteers are needed to help with an assortment of daily tasks, including light cleaning, straightening, gardening, or other various activities depending upon the location need. Opportunity Description
This volunteer opportunity allows you to assist the Outreach Services Department in delivery library materials to those who are unable to come to a library location. Volunteers must be attentive to detail, and enjoy being out in the community. In addition, Volunteers must be prepared to work in seasonal elements and be able to lift up to 20lbs. Help a student to understand their homework assignments, develop literacy skills, and more. Volunteers will assist students for a designated time amount. The volunteer will tutor students of all ages on various subject matters or on a drop in basis. A semester commitment is desired for this volunteer opportunity. As an official Dayton Metro Library Mascot, you will be a lovable extension of our Library family programs, special appearances, and other community events. While it takes responsibility, energy, and effort, it is also a ton of fun! The Library Mascot will be required to appear at Special Events. A Volunteer must meet the physical requirements/limitations of the Mascot costume by being between 5’2”-5’8” tall and weigh up to 185 pounds. In addition the Volunteer will be trained in the Mascot’s “signature moves”. Training will be provided and is required for this opportunity. Opportunity Description
Volunteers are needed to share their interests and skills in the Opportunity Spaces. You could help the Library offer open lab hours for Maker Kits that range from sewing to circuits, from lasers to music, from cooking to computing, and more. This volunteer opportunity allows you to serve as a mentor and Reading Buddy to a child in preschool through 3rd grade. The opportunity entails allowing a child to practice reading with a one-on-one volunteer. At the end of each reading segment or session you will ask the child to discuss and review what he or she has just read. This opportunity helps students with reading and comprehension skills. Assist the Dayton Metro Library support the community by volunteering as a Seed Lending Library Helper. This volunteer opportunity will allows the volunteer to assist Library locations in how-to-programs, and assist with the seed lending collection. Other volunteer duties consist of packing and labeling seeds, helping at the Seed and Perennial Plan Swap, and more. Opourtunity Description
Volunteer assistance is needed for Special/Episodic Events throughout the year. This can require set-up, maintaining a booth, and clean-up. Events may range from Party in the Park, Staff Day, and other festivals. Your name is added to a list of volunteers willing to be called a week or two in advance of each event. This volunteer opportunity takes place from May to August during the Summer Challenge Program. Volunteers can assist library staff members with helping with programming, counting and distributing flyers and prizes, counting attendees at Summer Challenge events/programs, promoting library programs and more. A Summer Feeding Program Helper assists Library staff and Dayton Public Schools in providing meals Monday thru Friday at various Library locations in the summer. Volunteers assist in passing out the food and monitoring the room during this daily program. Volunteers will be asked to assist in room setup and cleanup. This is a great opportunity to assist both the Dayton Metro Library staff and students of Dayton Public School System. Opportunity Description
Help an individual take his/her exam at the Library by serving as a test proctor. This opportunity may require a volunteer to mail or fax the exam back to the academic organization. A test proctor will never be asked to assist with an exam or complete and exam. Opportunity Description
